About Me
I’m Sarah! Daughter of immigrants, mother of three, and proof that ‘going back’ to your roots can actually mean moving forward
My Story
My father’s from India, my mom’s from Bogotá, and I was born in Florida where they met. Making me a walking embodiment of the American melting pot. But Colombia was never just “heritage” to me. It was my summer vacation destination, my abuelita’s stories, the mountains and aguas termales that filled my favorite childhood memories.
Growing up, my family spent summers visiting relatives in Bogotá who chose not to immigrate to the U.S. Once my abuelita started spending more time in the States, those trips became less frequent. But I always felt a pull to return and spend real time in Colombia – not just a week here and there.
In my mid-20s, I made it official: I applied for and received my Colombian citizenship as the child of a Colombian citizen. I didn’t have a specific move date in mind, but I knew I wanted to live here eventually. I also figured citizenship would make that transition infinitely easier than navigating visa applications. (And it definitely has!)
The truth is, I always knew I wanted to raise kids in Colombia. It was important to me that they grow up close to our roots. Celebrating through dance, food, holidays, speaking Spanish, and exploring Colombia’s incredible biodiversity. After years of running a local experiences business in Orlando and living in the Rocky Mountains, my husband and I finally made the leap three years ago.
We arrived in Medellín with one child and have since welcomed two more. My kids are growing up bilingual, experiencing the same cultural richness that shaped me. I’ve built a life that honors both my cultures: the American hustle and systems-thinking I grew up with, and the Colombian warmth, family values, and connection to place that runs through my veins.

What I Do
Through Mama in Medellín, I create honest, practical content for families building lives in Colombia – whether you’re an expat, a returning Colombian like me, or somewhere in between. My work spans:
In-Depth Guides
Blog posts covering everything from hiring household staff to exploring Colombia’s hidden gems with kids
Real Life Content
Instagram and TikTok videos showcasing real family life, travel adventures, and the realities (both wonderful and challenging) of raising kids between cultures
Resources & Systems
Ready-to-use resources and systems that help families transition smoothly without reinventing the wheel
Here’s what sets me apart: I intimately understand the mental load of managing a household, navigating two cultures, and trying to give your kids the best of both worlds – all while building a business and maintaining your sanity. I’ve already done the research, made the mistakes, asked the questions, and built the systems. Now I’m sharing that knowledge so you don’t have to start from scratch.
Think of me as the friend who’s already figured it out and is happy to share her notes.
Why I Created This Site
When I first moved to Medellín, I craved someone who could point me in the right direction – not hand me all the answers, but help me ask better questions and avoid rookie mistakes. Someone who’d share the practical stuff that somehow never makes it into official guides or Facebook groups.
That’s what I’m building here: a resource for the things that should be common knowledge but aren’t.
I’m not here to sell you a fantasy or spoon-feed you every detail (part of the adventure is figuring things out yourself). But I will share the messy, real, and beautiful truth about family life in Colombia: navigating healthcare systems, understanding visa paperwork, finding the right childcare setup for your family, discovering Colombia’s incredible travel opportunities beyond Cartagena, and the daily rhythms of raising kids who live between languages and cultures.
I believe in giving people the framework, not the blueprint. The rest? That’s your story to write.
Connect With Me
This site is my space to share longer-form guides, detailed resources, and comprehensive information that goes beyond what fits in a social media post. I’m building a community of parents who are creating unconventional, adventure-filled lives for their families.
